Incorrect Nutrition Labeling

Inspire Potato Wedges

Sainsbury’s Fresh Counter

These potato wedges have incorrect protein figures on the pack.  The wedges are labeled as 0.3g protein per half of the pack.  The correct figure is 6.9g protein per half pack.

The company has been alerted to this error and the information will be changed but please be aware that old stock will still display this incorrect protein value.

Cow and Gate Baby Food

Baby Balance Range

This new range of baby food cereals has been launched this week and the cereals contain milk powder.  Many of the new range have the same names as the old range eg Sunshine Banana Cereal.  The protein has increased from 2.6g/100g to 14.1g/100g.

Marks and Spencers Chewing Gum

There are now 3 flavours of chewing gum which are sweetened with sucralose which are suitable and do not need to be counted for the PKU diet. I picked these packets up at the pay desk.

Marks and Spencers are removing aspartame sweetened drinks from their range and replacing them with sucralose sweetened ones. That’s good news!

Sainsbury’s 6 Real Fruit Jam Tarts

These have been wrongly labeled as containing 0.1g protein for each jam tart. This is incorrect. They are 3.7gms per 100gms. Sainsbury’s are grateful for drawing their attention to this mistake and will be changing the label.

Just a word of warning about food labels. If you see something which looks too good to be true by having a much lower protein content than you would expect then it probably is not correct.  Please get in touch with Eleanor and she can check it out for you. dietitian@nspku.org

Ingredients are always listed with the main ingredient first and then listed in descending order. If there is an ingredient high up on the list which you normally do not take and the protein is unusually low it is likely there has been a mistake.

Dietary Information

New on Prescription - FirstPlay Dietary Foods Ltd.

This burger mix comes in sachets and each sachet provides 1 Exchange. You can make a very big burger for 1 exchange or 2 average-sized burgers which will be half an exchange each.

Don’t just make burgers, you can make the mix into a sausage shape or into meat ball shapes.  The latter would be really nice in a free tomato-based sauce.  See page 16 in the purple booklet.  As the mix is dry it’s not very heavy so would be useful for travelling, visiting friends, BBQ school trips and so on.

At the moment comes in original flavour.  You add water and simmer and have a good hot pudding which you can add raspberry jam to or serve with stewed fruit or tinned fruit.  You could also serve it cold with fruit on top or with a sweet sauce such as Tate and Lyle Saucy (except chocolate) or Silver Spoon Treat syrups- strawberry or maple or Rowse luxury strawberry or ginger sauce which is a bit more sophisticated!  A swirl of squirty cream ( Anchor  Aerosol Real Dairy Cream)100mls = ½ Exchange )could finish it off!

New on Prescription - SHS/Nutricia

This rice can be used in sweet and savoury  dishes.  SHS have produced a lovely recipe pack to go with the rice which can be added to their Low Protein Cookery File.  Ask your dietitian about how to obtain this.

Marks and Spencers

Good news for us.  Marks and Spencers have made the decision to change all their aspartame sweetened drinks over to sucralose.  This will take a little time but it will mean a much wider choice of drinks from this shop.  Sucralose is free of phenylalanine.
